The waiter appeared behind Henderson, arched the tray downward with a flourish and poured their drinks.

Lily took a sip. "Interesting taste."

"Never had Coca-Cola before? It's the great American drink."

Of course I've had Coca-Cola. Not with scotch. Lily tried it again. She rolled the sticky sweetness on her tongue. There was an aftertaste of peat. "It tastes like cotton candy made of mildew," she said.

"The glass vial—amphoriskos," Henderson said. "Is it worth a great deal of money?"

"You mean, would someone steal it? I suppose a collector might pay as much as a thousand dollars for it in a New York gallery." Lily picked up another pretzel and broke it in two. "I don't know what people pay for these things. I don't approve of the antiquities trade. Artifacts mean more in an archaeological context than in a vitrine in a New York apartment."

A pageboy, his uniform jacket buttoned up to his neck, a little cap slanted on his forehead, came toward them. "Mr. Henderson, sir. There's someone to see you at the concierge desk."

Henderson said, "Excuse me a moment," and left the table.

Lily could see him, nodding and gesturing, intent in conversation with someone who remained out of her line of vision. She watched couples on the dance floor, pomaded and bejew-eled. She picked up another pretzel and tried the drink again. She decided she didn't like it.

The music was smooth and soothing. "Let's Face the Music and Dance." She took another sip of the drink. It was still too sweet.

After a few minutes, Henderson returned and asked for the bill.
